MARCH 2010

We Want to Hear From You!

As your board pledged at our state conference in October, once again the Oregon State Chamber of Commerce (OSCC) is holding regional meetings around the state with chamber executives and key volunteer leadership. These meetings will last about two hours and the purpose is two-fold--first, to provide you with a general update regarding the activities and services of OSCC and second, to provide chambers with an opportunity to communicate with OSCC leadership.

We would like chamber executives to bring one or two of your volunteer leadership to the meeting to discuss the local and regional issues facing your chamber and your business community. And, discuss how OSCC can better assist you facing those challenges and help you meeting your objectives.  In addition, it would be a great opportunity for your board chair and/or government relations/public policy chair to discuss potential 2011 legislative issues.

While you are welcome to attend any one of the regional meetings (and we certainly hope you will), your board has attempted to divide the state into regions to make it as convenient as possible for all chambers to attend. In the very near future, you will receive more detailed information about the meeting in your area from your regional host. And, let me take this moment to send a big “thank you” to the chambers and chamber executives that have agreed to host one of these meetings. Please mark your calendars for these regional meetings:

Southern Oregon/South Coast Chambers – Friday, March 25 from 10:00am to Noon at the Grants Pass/Josephine County Chamber of Commerce. Register now.

North Coast Chambers – Thursday, May 13 from 10:00am to Noon at the Tillamook Area Chamber of Commerce. Register now.

I am, as are other OSCC board members, truly looking forward to meeting with you and your board leadership. If you have questions about the upcoming regional meetings or any OSCC activity, please feel free to call or email me at 541-672-2648 or debbie@roseburgareachamber.org.

OSCC Scholarships Due on April 9th

Each year, OSCC makes a commitment to professional development by providing scholarships to its members. Focused on professional development opportunities customized for the Chamber profession, guidelines for the OSCC scholarship programs include:

  • Recipients must a member in good standing.

  • Every scholarship applicant must submit a written application stating how he/she will benefit from the training and why financial assistance is necessary. The application must be accompanied by a recommendation from the Chamber chair or, in the case of a staff person, the chamber’s chief executive, showing support for training and development.

  • To broaden potential experience, scholarships will be given for training opportunities and national, regional and state chamber gatherings.

  • The applicant’s chamber must agree to make some level of financial contribution toward the applicant’s training at the event for which a scholarship is sought.

  • At least one scholarship for the WACE annual conference and one scholarship for the OSCC annual conference will be given to an “emerging chamber leader,” defined as a staff person who is considered a potential chamber executive.

  • An OSCC board-level committee will review applications and select scholarship recipients. Members of the scholarship review committee will be ineligible for a scholarship that year.

  • A waiting list for specific training opportunities will be kept. If a scholarship recipient becomes unable to attend a training, an alternate from the waiting list will be selected.

  • Only one scholarship will be awarded to one individual at an OSCC member chamber per year.
